“Beautifully Broken”

Hey all! We’re usually going to jump right into the list, because really, that’s why you’re here. But just a quick note: from now on Dennis and I will be doing one giant list together because, well, we agree a lot. And I much as True Blood inspires squealing, you probably don’t need to read it twice. That said, if one of us really agrees, they’ll be additional comments in brackets.

Now without further ado, this week’s episode. Tell us whatcha thought in the comments.

Bloody Good
Jesus
No, not The Messiah. Just Lafayette’s dreamy nurse, as played by Kevin Alejandro. I’ve noted in Remote Uncontrolled before Alejandro is in everything, but I might as well repeat it: He’s also on Southland (though they were gracious enough to let him do this too), and was Justin’s dad on Ugly Betty. Sleeper Cell, Sons of Anarchy, Shark, Drive, Weeds, Melrose Place, Drop Dead Diva, The Deep End, The Mentalist, you name it, this dude’s probably been on it. Hopefully being Lafayette’s mom will finally be his big break! Speaking of which… -D

The Woman Who Gave Lafayette Life
Oh Alfre Woodard, I’m so happy you’re here and no longer on Desperate Housewives imprisoning people in your basement (Fun fact: Eggs himself, Mechad Brooks played one of Woodard’s sons on the Housewives). Meeting Lafayette’s mom, explains Lafayette (and Tara and Lettie Mae too) so much more. Interesting that Woodard’s character is afraid people are putting stuff in her food and seeing people that aren’t there. On a show that’s as supernatural as this, I’m thinking there’s more than her just being “crazy.” -D

Jason: Successful Sidekick
Jason brought some decent comic relief throughout this episode. He seemed positively excited that Bill and Sookie might marry and Bill would join the family. And he got hit in the “family junk.” But best of all, he was able to ride shotgun in Andy’s cop car and even apprehended himself a meth head. I wonder if someone might have a future in law enforcement? -D

Sookie
Sookie is making the good list for the first (and knowing Sookie, only) time for her dead-on “Bill saying ‘Sookie’” impression. Who knew, that’s apparently enough for Sookie to get in my good graces? -D

[Sookie has been generally impressive this season, but a double thumbs up for that Bill-impression. A show like this not taking itself too seriously is a show that's going to stick around. -Z]

Godric’s Back!
Just because he up and went poof in the sunlight last season, doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of him! Everyone lives on in flashbacks (except Gran Stackhouse, who really deserves some sort of cameo). I liked that Sookie compared her losing Bill to Eric losing Godric. Erick’s right. That’s not the same Sookie. Godric and Eric are way more interesting. Still… -D

Terry’s List
I doubt Terry was ever intended to be the character that he is, but I’m sure glad it worked out that way. His list of reasons he’s good with kids–including nursing an armadillo–was nothing sort of muddling, sweet hearted genius. In short, the essence of Terry. -Z

Blood Gelato
I’m not such a huge fan of the ever-growing complexities of vamper politics, because things like that tend to more confusion over time, but I’m digging the new characters it’s bringing in. The dinner party was a highlight, with everyone at the table dressed for very different events and the menu the sort of wonder that a true foodie, now living on one thing, would turn to. I’m still not in love with the king/queen/magistrate thing, but I adore the characters and the more far-away-and-increasingly-gay situations it puts Bill in, the better. -Z

Good Werewolf CGI
Bad werewolves are a dime a dozen. Even Twilight, with all it’s budgetary prowess can only do a mediocre job and most are far, far, far worse. So many props for the prop people (and animal wranglers) who are making those werewolf transitions work. -Z

Sucks
Nazi Werewolves
Seriously show? Is that what this mystery is going to be all season? Folks hunting down Anti-Semitic Werewolves? Because I’m not digging that. Then again, I didn’t understand what the hell was going on in half this episode. There was a mysterious person going through a mysterious drawer in a mysterious house with a Stackhouse family tree in one of them. What does it all mean!? -D

Lorena
Another thing I’m not digging? The recurring presence of Bill’s maker. Her only presence on the show appears to show up and try and break up Bill and Sookie. While you’d think I’d be all for that, I wish her character would have some purpose on the show besides trying to steal somebody’s man. This ain’t Passions. Though I doubt this will be the end, may Bill setting her on fire, please just bring an end to this character! -D

[I could not agree with this more and I would love it if the fire ended her. Sadly, I assume we'll see some healing scenes in the next episode and SNORE. I am fine with them trying to break-up Bill and Sookie (especially after Eric's come on this week), but do we really need some sort of love pentagram, or whatever this is? -Z]

Sam and His Family
I really don’t dislike Sam, but man, do I not care about his family issues. Oh, woe is me, I have a superpower and I was adopted. I’m not saying that shit wouldn’t leave scars, I’m just saying watching those scars be picked at is not particularly compelling television. The brotherly moments were nice, but with some much of the action taking place outside of Bon Temps this season, it’d be nice to have Sam around to ground things and to be one less C-plot to remember. -Z

Vague Clues of Vagueness
I’m all for shows that make me think. I am less for shows that don’t so much seem to be leaving clues for me to pick-up and mull over as dropping randomness into the episodes that will cause a “oh, so that’s what was up” moment. it’s not worth the pay-off, for me. Especially when what that moment is involves a lingering close-up of someone’s cowboy boot. Viewers, note! Cowboy boots are apparently important! DUN DUN DUN!!!! -Z

Vampire Politics
This was mentioned above, but I love the characters the vampire politics brings into our lives, but until the show explains what is happening(or, if they have, explain it in a way I actually retain) it’s frustrating to spend scenes thinking “Wait, so, there’s a King/Queen in every state? What’s going on here?” Also, I’m not sure why immortal hedonists would set up so many gosh darned rules for themselves, but that’s another issue altogether. -Z
