Summer Viewing

michael-and-michael-1Ah, summer. It’s a glorious time for movies but not so much for TV. It’s not quite the wasteland it once was thanks to creative cable programmers, but it’s still hard to find much worth your time, and since Mad Men was pushed back from its usual start date of July to the end of August, even cable’s pretty spare this year.

There are diamonds in the rough, though. I’m really loving Michael and Michael Have Issues, the strange sitcom from Michaels Showalter and Ian Black of The State fame. Comedy pilots are rarely very funny, and it’s been routinely hilarious from the outset. Rescue Me is having an eventful season, even if I could use a lot more Lou and a lot less Janet and Sheila nonsense. And while Conan’s stint on The Tonight Show may not be pulling in viewers like the evil Jay Leno did, the quality of the show is through the roof, which comes as a welcome surprise to longtime fans like myself who worried his weirdness would turn into blandness in the earlier time slot. I’ve also caught up on older series on DVD I missed, like the absolutely incredible Deadwood and even The X-Files (I know, I’m ridiculously late to the party).

So in this first installment of Share, we ask you, loyal reader: What have you been watching this summer?

  • Paul Starr

I’ve been watching Leverage. It’s pretty light fare, but ridiculously fun.

Although from my perspective it’s less “Leverage” and more “The Parker and Hardison Show.”

Also I rewatched Roll Bounce, which is a great summer roller skating movie if you’re a skate nerd like me, and I’m tooling up for an Avatar rewatch, but then again I’m pretty much always tooling up for an Avatar rewatch (shut up).

Hmm, haven’t checked out Leverage, though I am a Timothy Hutton fan. Those TNT shows get a huge audience, but I wish they’d be a tad more original.

The only tv I’ve really watched has been Conan, Jeopardy, and Daisy of Love. It goes well with watching my way through Eric Rohmer’s Six Moral Tales and Truffaut’s Antoine Doinel saga on netflix.

Oh and earlier this summer I finally watched most of the first season of Freaks & Geeks and was amazed how well preserved Jason Segal and James Franco are.

I have a great idea for the next VH1 reality travesty: filming Daisy from Daisy of Love WHILE WATCHING Eric Rohmer films! Then again, she may just fall asleep, and there’s no fun in that.

Isn’t Freaks & Geeks just the best thing ever? So funny, so sweet, so many great characters. Apatow is truly a master.

After not watching for a couple seasons, I’m stuck on Hell’s Kitchen again. (I know, reality TV…sue me.) And Wipeout continues to make for a decent evening of family-safe watching. I’ve even been catching Castle re-runs in anticipation of next season (WHOO!). One show that I’ve been trying to keep up with is Hung. Saw part of the first episode and haven’t gotten any further yet, but looks sorta interesting. Anyone watching that?

Other than that, I’ve been mostly catching up on movies new and old (which you can follow along on Twitter but you knew that already).

Nurse Jackie and catching up on season 2 of Californication on SHO On Demand. Love them both.

I WAS watching Hung with the free HBO my cable company accidentally gave me for 2 weeks, but was forced by my overriding cheapness to stop when I’d actually have to PAY for it. First episode was interesting and second was better. Hell’s Kitchen is DEFINITELY a summer show for me, to the point that I was insulted that Fox tried to foist its last season on me in the middle of normal TV season. This is ridiculously enjoyable trash, pure and simple, which is perfect in the summer.

Think I’d love Nurse Jackie, but, alas, I am cheap and won’t pay for Showtime.

Burned through Prison Break seasons 1-3 (and yes, enjoyed them all…) before giving up on the ridiculousness that was season 4. Then I burned through Medium. Sigh… When is Dexter coming back?

    >Isn’t Freaks & Geeks just the best thing ever?

Utter gold. Gotta love the Joel Hodgson cameos as well.

Finally got caught up on Hung. Gotta say, I’m kinda liking it for how simple it is. I only wish each episode was longer and that Ray’s kids weren’t so friggin’ weird.

I know people that swear by Prison Break, but I always wondered how that premise could hold up for so long. Isn’t the series over now? I always thought I should give it a chance, but after seeing what happened to 24, I don’t have much faith in Fox and their hour-long action dramas anymore.

And yeah, Freaks & Geeks…I remember seeing maybe two episodes when it originally aired and I guess I didn’t get much out of it at the time. I must find a copy of that and watch it
