David Fincher and Charlize Theron producing HBO serial killer series
Fincher is the latest big name filmmaker lured to HBO following new projects with Martin Scorsese and Michael Mann
After getting Martin Scorsese involved with the pilot for the upcoming Atlantic City period drama Boardwalk Empire and Michael Mann to direct the initial installment of David Milch’s horseracing series Luck, HBO has recruited a crack team for a new serial killer series called Mind Hunter: patron saint of serial killer movies David Fincher (Zodiac, Seven), Dexter writer Scott Buck, and… Charlize Theron?! The trio will produce the new series, and though no actors or directors are confirmed yet, you can bet that HBO is leaning on those two marquee names hard, especially Theron, who hasn’t done much of note since 2008′s Hancock (and before that, 2003′s Monster).
The series is based on the book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit by John Douglas and Mark Olshaker, about Douglas’ experiences as an FBI profiler and investigator. After a fallow period following the ends of signature series The Sopranos, Deadwood and The Wire, HBO is obviously pouring all of its resources into new shows like those I listed at the beginning of this story, along with George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones and David Simon’s Treme.
