Linkin Park.

They get overlooked by the likes of Linkin Park; you won't see any of their albums or songs on recent lists from Rolling Stone, for example. But they're not interested in gauging the expression of the pulse of a generation; I take it that they're more trying to point out interesting artistic developments, even if they're from not-very-mainstream bands like Wilco or the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. But just look at how many views Linkin Park has on YouTube, and you can figure out whom Gen-Y-ers are viewing.

Of course, many of the things they watch on YouTube are rather shitty or sensational, from Justin Bieber to Rebecca Black. But with Linkin Park there is truly something that expresses the heart of a generation. Cynicism, frustration, angst, but activism and awareness.

Robert, you would probably like all these bands, but you'd probably LOVE LCD Soundsystem. Check out "Losing My Edge" and "House of Jealous Lovers" by the Rapture (produced by LCD's frontman). Try "Summertime Clothes" and "My Girls" from Animal Collective, "Wolf Like Me" and "Province" from TV On The Radio, and you've probably heard a lot from Arcade Fire without knowing it ("Wake Up" is the Where The Wild Things Are song, and "My Body Is A Cage" was used in that awesome YouTube vid with the Once Upon A Time In The West shootout).

Armando, I actually really like Coldplay, but their success is a great example of just how influential Radiohead has been, since they are to Radiohead what Bush was to Nirvana.

@Scott, I've heard some of those before (I think I even have Kid A in my collection) but I'll check out those others.

Also, is it bad that I don't know anything about 4-7? I've literally never heard a single song from these acts...man, I'm so out of touch with pop music.

@Armando...what's a Coldplay?

Here's a briefer on Radiohead's work this decade for Robert and anyone else not convinced of their greatness. I'm sure you can find these easily on YouTube or your download site of choice:

The National Anthem
Optimistic
Morning Bell
How to Disappear Completely
Knives Out
Backdrifts
There there
Myxomatosis
Bodysnatchers
Weird Fishes/Arpeggi
House of Cards

Big fan of Timbaland and his pop work this decade (FutureSex/LoveSounds will probably be in my top 10 albums list), though I think he made even more impact in the late 90's. Same with Outkast, who I absolutely love, and who did some great work this decade, but I think peaked in the late 90's.

I don't know why but I've never been able to get into Radiohead in any big way. Its hard to know what real influence they've had when you don't really dig their music but millions of people can't be wrong I suppose.

As far as hip-hop, I'd throw in Timbaland only because he really came into his own in the aughties and thanks to mining genres like techno, breakbeat and dub, produced music unlike anything we'd heard before 2000. Think about it.
