The Office is probably my favorite TV series ever, so I'm glad it made the cut! I really think it has one important lesson to teach not only comedies, but drama series, too: have a story, tell it, and move on. The fact that there are only 14 episodes allowed them to really focus the narrative and give every episode significance in advancing it. And the climax was a real climax. I can't help thinking that if the writers of Lost had sat down and said, "right--we're going to tell this story over the course of four seasons, that's it," it would have been an even more taut, focused, dramatic story. And Arrested Development wouldn't have been caught with its pants down, constantly wondering if they had another season to wrap things up or not.

Love the list, though. FNL at #2 warms m heart. :)

Since BSG was my pick, let me just say that it's on this list not only because I enjoyed it (what's such a complete mess about ir?) but also because of its significance as a rare successful remake that goes so much further beyond the original than anyone expected.

Scott, you know I love you, but there is no universe where Battlestar Galactica is better than The Wire.

Even if you grant BSG its successes—and I will grant those—it is structurally a complete mess.

Jeff, if this was solely my list among the major changes would be no Lost and there would be the Wire. Like Scott said, it was at the top of my list and I completely disagree with him on the overrated thing.

However, in the time between voting and submitting our ballots, a lot of other sites came out with their lists. The Wire was always in the Top Ten, but never Pushing Daisies, which I felt was unnecessarily penalizing a show for being canceled young and ignored during its airing.

I do think The Wire is among the best shows of the decade, but I had a limited number of slots, and I choose Pushing Daisies instead. I hate ranking anyways and, as Scott said, I decided I'd rather focus on otherwise ignored shows. This is also why I advocated for Avatar to be included.

Look, there's a lot of shows missing from our list (no Joss Whedon shows, for one). It's obviously imperfect. But the 00s were a great time for TV and that made it extra hard to choose.

Tl;dr: It's Scott's fault for hating Baltimore!

Alison, nope, like Friday Night Lights, Arrested Development and Pushing Daisies. Each writer had a certain number of slots to fill and Zoe (who wanted to include The Wire) decided that she'd rather highlight those instead. I'll leave it to her to explain her reasoning, but whatever it was I agree with it. I'm frankly sick of reading about how awesome The Wire was. I had a similar problem trying to fit in The Shield, which I think has been sadly ignored in lists like these, but there just wasn't room.

When it comes down to it though, I do think Lost, The Sopranos and Battlestar Galactica are better than The Wire.

"Jeff, we considered The Wire, but ultimately felt that we’d rather use our slots to celebrate some other less celebrated shows that deserve praise."

Some of us like the show more than others, and it was actually at the top of one of our voters' ballots. I personally think it's extremely overrated; the first three seasons are great, the fourth is iffy and the fifth is really mediocre. The Sopranos and especially Deadwood are much, much better.

Where is The Wire?! The only show I'd even /think/ of putting above The Wire is Arrested Development.
