It used to be that the summer movie season started off on Memorial Day, but in recent years that’s moved further and further into May. This year, May starts off with a bang thanks to the highly-anticipated follow-up to 2008′s smash hit Iron Man. This summer has a little something for everyone (and some of it may not be for anyone at all), and here’s what’s on our radar for 2010. Be sure to check back for our June, July and August picks!

Iron Man 2
Directed by Jon Favreau
Robert Downey Jr., Mickey Rourke, Scarlett Johansson
As unlikely as it seemed that Robert Downey Jr. would make a good comic book superhero, and as unlikely as it seemed that Jon Favreau would make such a high-octane, visually-impressive blockbuster, they’re back on the big screen to do it all over again. This time they’ve brought some new friends—and some hefty cachet—to the mix with Don Cheadle, Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke and Scarlett Johannson to fill out the cast of characters. In a day when superhero movies are getting a bit long in the tooth, all signs point to Iron Man as one of the few franchises that can stand the test of time, or can it? If we can just get to that Avengers flick…

Robin Hood
Directed by Ridley Scott
Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett
As old and tattered as the legend of Robin Hood is, it also seems to get told better and better with every iteration. If 1991′s Kevin Costner vehicle gave us a strange mix of tongue-in-cheek and Hollywood set pieces (and that Bryan Adams song, of course), Ridley Scott foregoes all of that in hopes of building a full-on epic. Personally, we’re hoping for something along more the lines of Scott’s last medieval foray, Kingdom of Heaven, and less Prince of Thieves. And with Russell Crowe playing the lead, we’re willing to bet it’ll be far more engaging than anyone who’s come before him.

MacGruber
Director: Jorma Taccone
Will Forte, Kristen Wiig, Val Kilmer
MacGruber! At first look it sounds like the worst idea for an SNL movie ever. MacGruber! But then the trailer came out and it was pretty hilarious. MacGruber! It may be a sleeper hit. MACGRUBER!
But we digress. Thankfully it looks like the MacGruber character is just being used as a jumping off point for an overall mockery of 80′s action movies as a whole. We had zero interest in this until it was revealed that Val Kilmer is playing the villain and that his name is Dieter Von Cunth. Some are touting this as a sleeper hit, but it could likely turn out like Hot Rod, the first film of this SNL generation: insanely momentous flop turned cult classic through various YouTube clips.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
Director: Mike Newell
Jake Gyllenhaal, Ben Kingsley
Aren’t you psyched for Prince of Persia, America?!? Yeah, me neither. Entertainment Tonight and E! and all the bastions of entertainment journalism has this hyped as the big action hit of the summer, but we can’t seem to find a single person who’s the least bit interested in seeing it. The original game (and even the Sands of Time update) was fantastic, but the trailers for this film don’t help in the slightest, with a feather-haired Jake Gyllenhaal sporting glowing eyes and shapeshifting abilities fighting evil or something. We’re expecting Brendan Frasier to show up yelling “I HATE MUMMIES!”
